Stinson Municipal Airport is the nation’s second-oldest continuously operating airport, after Maryland’s College Park Airport, opened in 1909 as the Wright brothers’ military demonstration site.

Stinson’s identifying code is a nod to its essentially personal past: SSF, in honor of the Stinson School of Flying — a private, family enterprise that opened in 1915 and grew into the important city facility that’s celebrating its centennial this year.

There were four flying siblings who came to San Antonio in pursuit of aviation careers: Katherine, Eddie, Marjorie and Jack Stinson. [Excerpt from San Antonio Express News]
